Knit With What You've Got! 5-Week Hand-Knitting Workshop

6:30pm ‐ 8:00pm
Knit With What You've Got! 5-Week Hand-Knitting Workshop

This 5-part workshop will be running every Thursday 18.30-20.00 from 4th March - 1st April 2021

Is your wardrobe bursting with old, damaged or unwanted clothing? Are you desperate to make use of this fabric but don't know where to start!?

Why not use them to make something new! In this five-part workshop find out how to give old items of clothing a new life, using them to make yarn to knit something entirely different.

These sessions will boost your imagination, resourcefulness and allow you to re-create some of your favourite items into new, exciting forms. Learn new skills and tap into mindfulness by creating something with your hands.

No previous knowledge or skills in knitting are needed so these workshops are perfect for beginners. If you don't have your own knitting needles to hand, you can use pencils instead.

Session 1: Gathering materials and knitting basics (casting on, plain knit, knit and purl for ribbed knits, decreasing and increasing)
Session 2: Sizing and shaping of garment (neck lines; arm holes; starting on the front panel and following a pattern)
Session 3: Starting on the back panel and following the pattern
Session 4: Trims, exploring ways to create interesting finishing for edges of garment panels (neck, sleeves, waist and pockets)
Session 5: Finishing the garment

About the facilitator:

Maija Nygren is a knitwear designer with a passion for education.

Maija belives that people have a necessity to be creative, yet this is often overlooked due to our busy lives. Through making our own clothing or other items, we gain a great sense of achievement, learn to value clothing and understand the effort that has gone into creating them.

Maija graduated from Heriot-Watt School of Textiles with a BA(Hons) and MA in Knitwear (2018). Maija lectures at DJCAD, Dundee University and works as a freelance designer and educator for Almaborealis Ltd, promoting circular economy principals in fashion and textiles.

Concessionary Discount Information:
